From the Tulsa suburb of Broken Arrow, OK, JD McPherson and his ace band (Jimmy Sutton on bass, Doug Corcoran on guitar/sax, Ray Jacildo on keyboards, Jason Smay on drums) have generated a buzz and an energy not seen around a roots-based rock'n'roll band since the early days of The Blasters, in the early 1980s. McPherson, who grew up on a cattle ranch outside Tulsa and studied film and art in college, absorbed early rock'n'roll and R&B the way a sponge soaks up water, and then threw punk into the mix as well. Being fired from teaching middle-school art in Tulsa for having the audacity to play Bad Brains for his students freed him to work on his debut album, 2012's "Signs and Signifiers," with the signature tune "North Side Gal" as an exclamation point. Following much word-of-mouth, he and the band set to album No. 2, the critically acclaimed "Let the Good Times Roll," a 2015 release.
